About the Role

The Scientific American Editor in Chief leads the editorial teams responsible for producing the flagship magazine, scientificamerican.com and other branded products. The role is responsible for developing an editorial vision and strategy and managing day-to-day content creation that engages our existing audiences, grows brand visibility and supports audience growth and revenue. The Editor in Chief is responsible for upholding a newsroom culture that encourages experimentation and innovation while also maintaining the highest editorial standards of excellence.  This position is an important brand representative both within Springer Nature and externally within business and science communities.

 

Role Responsibilities:

  • Set content vision and strategy that responds to business opportunities and emerging media trends, user data and market conditions -- both long and immediate term.
  • Oversee daily content and monthly magazine production, ensuring it meets quality standards, is timely and relevant to the audience. Provide final editorial guidance day-to-day on tone and legal reviews.
  • Set tone for content overall, and work with team members to deliver that tone consistently across multiple media platforms.
  • Maintain the brand values and integrity of Scientific American by establishing and upholding editorial policies and guidelines.
  • Collaborate with peers to set strategies that support brand monetization including consumer subscriptions, advertising sponsorships, events and other initiatives.
  • Plan and supervise strategic editorial projects, such as special reports and single-topic issues, on all content platforms (Print, Online, Audio, Video).
  • Contribute to the growth of Scientific American, including developing and launching new content, products, and brand-related services that meet audience needs.
  • Build and maintain connections and visibility within the relevant academic and commercial spaces to support business growth and stay abreast of relevant trends in science communication.
  •  Oversee editorial budgets and ongoing efforts to improve efficiency.
  • Collaborate with international editions, including participating in the development of large collaborative projects.
  • Represent Scientific American and Springer Nature, as needed, with an eye to creating other synergies for other parts of the company.
  • Mentor and nurture the newsroom, fostering a culture of creativity, innovation and growth.
  • Collaborate on audience development and growth strategies, working closely with marketing, engagement and product team to track progress and optimize results.

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

  • BA/BS required. Advance degree preferred.
  • Extensive experience as a journalist with a preferred focus on science journalism.
  • Experience managing a large team. 
  • Demonstrated success developing new products, working with data, and cross-functional teams.
  • Experience producing multi-platform products (print, digital, video, podcasts).
  • Knowledge of and deep connections in the world of science.

US Annualized Base Salary Range: $195,000 - $235,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level and equity. The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
