Objective

I hope to meet other like-minded Asian American journalists and producers who care about open communications, social justice, and education. I plan to attend the 2024 AAJA Convention and Career in Austin, Texas, and hope to learn more about the professional journalism industry.

I am a student studying history and sociology at Columbia University. I am a deputy city news editor at the Columbia Daily Spectator, Columbia University's independent student newspaper. I preside over our youth and education beat and have written over 20 articles covering education-related issues in West Harlem, while maintaining relationships with community leaders and elected officials. I take on a deputy managerial role by leading a team of 25 staff writers, editing about five articles every week, and finding pitches for my reporters on a tight deadline. I have had the chance to work with a diverse group of writers and I properly learned how to copyedit with AP style.

I collaborate with leaders in other departments, such as graphics and engagement, who have helped me add more multimedia to my pieces. I always ensure that my writing is high-quality and timely. Spectator has prepared me for a role in journalism because I know how to work interpersonally in a fast-paced environment while growing my research, writing, and pitching skills.

Outside of journalism and my academics, I have a background in community organizing and social justice. I am a proud advocate for the Asian American community on topics related to public education, culturally responsive curricula, and mental health support for students. I also work in tandem with Black and Brown community organizers and regularly gain inspiration from the 1960s Black Civil Rights Movement.
