Inc. is looking for an editorial director who will serve as a key newsroom leader in bringing our excellent business journalism to life through community initiatives, signature brand events, and recognition programs, most notably Inc.’s marquee franchise, the Inc. 5000. This role will involve managing a team of enterprising, versatile journalists who adapt our understanding of the world of entrepreneurs into new formats, ranging from panel discussions and networking events that help us better cover themes we also cover editorially, to devising editorial-list projects that give definition and help readers better understand the world of startups and entrepreneurial growth companies. The editorial director will also liaise with various divisions including ad sales, direct-to-consumer, data, product, and design, helping communicate and operationalize strategy and initiatives across the organization.
Salary range: $140,000 - $180,000 + bonus eligible. Compensation may vary based on relevant experience, skills, industry, and education.
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING
Collaborating with the editor-in-chief to implement the overall strategy and vision for Inc., which starts with journalistic excellence and quality in the context of events, recognition programs, list franchises, and community initiatives
Managing and directing a team while also coordinating efforts across the broader newsroom among senior editors, writers, designers, photo editors, and reporters
Overseeing long-term editorial strategy and planning of major franchises, starting with the Inc. 5000 program
Overseeing editorial aspects of events strategy, including speaker booking and event themes
Developing new event and list concepts including built-if-sold concepts
Overseeing related budget, contracts and invoices across all channels (digital, print, events, etc.)
Setting and holding team members accountable to performance standards
Taking part in live appearances at Inc. conferences and acting as a representative of the brand at industry events
Developing and communicating strategy and initiatives across the organization
Providing the ad sales team with content ideas as needed for RFPs, proposals, etc.
Developing, in collaboration with the editor-in-chief, career development and enrichment for editorial staff
Setting and driving the cultural tone for Inc.’s editorial operations, ensuring alignment with Mansueto Ventures's values
Job Requirements
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
A Bachelor's degree is preferred
15+ years of journalism experience with an emphasis on events, brand franchises, and list/recognition program initiatives
Experience managing audience engagement and development through events and list/recognition program initiatives
Experience booking speakers and executing events in a journalistic context
Experience working on ad-related projects including sponsored events
Excellent writing and editing skills, outstanding editorial judgment
Experience setting and managing OKRs or other goals
Exceptional communication skills and knowledge of cross-media platforms
