Launched in 2019, THE CITY is New York City’s preeminent nonprofit, nonpartisan, local news organization. Working across all five boroughs, our award-winning journalists bring deeply diverse skills and backgrounds to the task of covering New York’s neighborhoods, holding the powerful to account, and making sense of the greatest city in the world at a moment of unprecedented urgency. THE CITY is currently in a growth phase that will strengthen its business capabilities, build its contributed income and membership base, and expand its newsroom.

The Position

THE CITY is seeking a talented, versatile, mission-driven software developer. 

You'll work with teams across the institution to build great public-facing site features as well as mission-critical tools that help our journalists, fundraisers, and audience specialists thrive. 

We are looking for someone who has:

• A love of New York City and a commitment to helping its people make it better.
• The ability to work independently and in teams to take a project from idea to launch.
• Mastery of HTML, CSS and SASS with an understanding of fundamental design principles and of interactive storytelling.
• Comfort with writing modern Javascript with or without a framework. 
• Knowledge of a common back-end language such as PHP, Python or Ruby as well as cloud hosting systems like AWS or Google Cloud.
• Experience with email template design.
• Familiarity with off-the-shelf tools in common use at news websites, especially those for user analytics, email newsletters, and donations.

The City is about three years old. It’s tight-knit, fast-paced, and growing. There will be no typical days here. The ideal candidate will thrive in an environment where they can be building donation tools one day and helping code an innovative interactive story template the next.

The position is full-time and based in our newsroom in Manhattan. Pay will be commensurate with experience but our expected salary range is from $95,000 to $120,000.
