The Maynard Institute for Journalism Education (MIJE) was founded in 1977 by the first Black editor of the Oakland Tribune, Robert C. Maynard, to promote diversity and antiracism in the news media through improved coverage, hiring and business practices. The Institute's programs have trained hundreds of American journalists and media managers of color. The Maynard Institute strives to ensure that all members of our community are fairly, credibly and accurately represented across the spectrum of all media platforms.
