Marketplace seeks a Senior Producer for our hit show This Is Uncomfortable, a narrative and storytelling podcast that explores how money impacts our relationships and feelings. The show has received wide acclaim, most recently including winning a Gracie Award in 2021, and selection by Apple Podcasts for a month-long promotion for their Spotlight editorial program that celebrates and highlights talented creators. 

As Senior Producer, you’d work with a talented and collaborative production team on shaping and editing episodes’ structure, making assignments, and ensuring the show’s journalistic and narrative quality.  You should be a strong manager and coach; a kind, creative and deadline-oriented leader; and have experience running narrative podcasts and working collaboratively in a team environment. 

You’d join a creative, ambitious team at Marketplace, with a podcast that’s part of a growing portfolio of over 11 million listeners per month. We’re one of the most dynamic multimedia brands in the country, known for an irreverent approach to business and economic news on multiple platforms.  

Minimum Compensation: LA: $106,914; NY: $111,499; St. Paul: $92,867. Exact salary determined by experience and education related to the role, organizational compensation structure, geographic location, and internal equity.

Location: Los Angeles, CA or New York, NY, or Remote USA

Your Role:

  • Communicate the vision, direction, sound, and standards for each season of the show.
  • Play a key role in editorial planning for the podcast with a small team.
  • Consistently deliver with Marketplace’s voice and value proposition.
  • Participate in ongoing evaluation and improvement of the podcast.
  • Workshop and greenlight episode ideas and season theme and arc.
  • Edit others’ work, including line edits, suggested cuts, mixing notes, and overall editorial direction.
  • Work collaboratively towards continued audience growth.
  • Ensure cultivation of diverse sources and interview subjects.
  • Foster a creative and productive work environment.  Create development opportunities and development plans for staff and training to enhance skills and foster growth.
  • Lead communication around production and editorial focus for each season with marketing, communications, social and other internal and external partners. 
  • Maintain knowledge of local, national and international news, especially as it relates to themes of the podcast.
  • Manage timely delivery for all podcast elements.
  • Serve as senior quality control staff member for program material.
  • Help develop and manage new podcasts, as needed.
  • Manage small podcast team within a growing On Demand department.
  • Assist with fundraising as appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Strong ability to structure compelling audio content and stories.
  • 7+ experience, including three years at management/supervisory level.
  • Supervisory/management experience is required - experience must demonstrate an ability to foster high standards and an ability to coach, inspire and lead.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Experience producing podcasts.
  • Dynamic storytelling ability.
  • Experience working with hosts.
  • Ability to think big and create memorable audio, and able to manage the myriad daily details of production.
  • Flexible under deadline pressure, able to work effectively and collaboratively with hosts and other staff.
  • Must have sense for the This Is Uncomfortable style, rhythm, and sound. 
  • Ability to quickly write and edit smart, compelling content for a variety of platforms.
  • High journalistic standards and a vision for the podcast– for each episode, and in the long term.
  • Strong audio production experience
  • Highly motivated, well organized and flexible.
  • Resourcefulness and ability to problem-solve.
  • Independence, initiative and excellent judgment.
  • Field production experience.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of digital audio broadcast software and techniques, studio and field production.
