Award-Winning Investigative News Publication Seeks Editor-in-Chief

The award-winning investigative news publication Capital & Main is seeking an editor-in-chief to lead its editorial department beginning in May. The position is based in Los Angeles and offers a great opportunity to join a growing nonprofit newsroom of passionate, talented journalists.

We are looking for an editor with at least ten years of experience in both investigative and narrative journalism to head a small team of highly skilled reporters and editors. The most important qualifications for this position include:

·       Proven ability to assign and edit a wide range of investigative, news and narrative stories

·       A high level of skill in working with and supporting both veteran and younger reporters

·       Excellent judgment and discernment with regards to editorial assignments and content

·       A strong interest in and commitment to social-impact journalism including coverage of economic inequality

The editor-in-chief oversees all editorial content for Capital & Main and is responsible for ensuring that the publication produces between 20 and 30 stories a month. This includes news and news analysis, investigative stories, narrative articles, data analysis, interviews and multimedia content. The editor works closely with an associate editor and multimedia editor as well as the publisher, fact-checkers and proof-readers. Stories are written both by staff reporters and freelance contributors.

Founded in 2013, Capital & Main reports on inequality as well as race, climate change, immigration, education and health issues, both in California and nationally. Our stories are co-published in a wide range of outlets, including USA Today, Newsweek, the Guardian, Fast Company, the American Prospect and many others. In 2020, Capital & Main produced the largest American reporting project on inequality, with nearly 100 stories over the course of 12 months, and also launched a major new reporting initiative on climate change as well as two original podcasts on COVID-19. Last year the publication won more than 40 awards from a range of regional and national contests, including Online Journalist of the Year and Best News Website Exclusive to the Internet (Southern California Journalism Awards).
